Dozens Injured by Criminal Drivers in New York
New York is no stranger to crime, and criminals often zoom down city streets while intoxicated, fleeing the police, or a mixture of both. This obviously puts innocent people in serious danger. Too often, innocent bystanders become injured by criminal drivers. In addition, police vehicles may also cause “collateral damage” while chasing these suspects. Two recent crashes in New York show the extent of this problem.
Driver Charged with DUI after Injuring Eight People in Queens
On October 29th of 2023, CBS News reported that eight people had been injured by a drunk driver in Queens. The driver was taken into custody after barreling through an intersection and striking several vehicles. He also apparently struck a teen pedestrian. The crash left a scattered mess of smashed vehicles – including a bicycle that had fallen off a bike rack. Arriving at the scene, first responders assumed that a cyclist had been injured in the crash – although they later determined that the bike had simply been attached to one of the vehicles.
Police Chase Leads to Two Crashes Involving MTA Buses in Brooklyn
Police say that they were attempting to pull over a vehicle in Brooklyn when it sped off, eventually crashing into two MTA buses down the road. NBC News states that the suspect “ping ponged” off the two buses before eventually coming to a halt. Video surveillance shows that the vehicle was speeding before the crash. The report also notes that a mother was pushing a stroller across the intersection at the time of the crash. NBC argues that if the buses had not acted as a kind of “shield,” the mother and child might have been struck by the speeding vehicle. Fortunately, she and her baby only experienced a mild shower of debris from the impact.
Two bus drivers, three bus passengers, and two occupants of the suspect vehicle were hospitalized as a result of the crash. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find several people “trapped in the wreckage.” Details of the crash are somewhat unclear, and the severity of the injuries is not known. It is also unclear why the vehicle was being pulled over in the first place. This comes after another high-profile bus crash involving a double-decker tour bus and an MTA bus. While the criminal driver was clearly at fault in this specific situation, bus drivers are also fully capable of negligence.
