Long Island Expressway Sees Two Major Trucking Accidents

TrucksOnRoad

Over the space of just a few days, the Long Island Expressway has seen two major trucking accidents. For those who drive on the “LIE” frequently, this shouldn’t come as a major surprise. Semi-trucks pose serious hazards to average drivers in Long Island, and truck accidents are relatively common. What legal steps can you take after a semi-truck accident in Manhasset?

Tractor-Trailer Barrels into Construction Zone on Long Island Expressway

In late October of 2024, traffic authorities reported that a tractor-trailer had crashed into a construction zone on the Long Island Expressway. The truck reportedly struck a smaller vehicle at about 1:30 AM, causing numerous injuries. One occupant of this smaller vehicle was in the process of working on the construction zone when the accident occurred.

The impact damaged the passenger-side door and caused a second occupant to become entrapped within the vehicle. Both suffered moderate injuries in the collision. In addition, one of the first responders suffered a head injury while extracting the passenger. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Oil Tanker Crashes on the Long Island Expressway

At around the same time, an oil tanker overturned on the Long Island Expressway. Police subsequently arrested a teenage driver who allegedly caused the crash, which ended with the oil tanker overturned on the side of the highway. This teenager reportedly smashed into the rear of the oil tanker, causing it to flip over and crash into a wooded area.

Police later determined that the teen was intoxicated, and that he was fleeing from pursuing officers at the time of the crash. He now faces a slew of charges, including DWAI by drugs, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.

Fortunately, the oil tanker did not explode or ignite – which was a real possibility. That being said, the trucker was still injured in the crash – and the teen driver was also airlifted to a nearby hospital. It goes without saying that this crash could have been much worse – especially if any of these vehicles went up in flames.

Elsewhere in Long Island, street racers “scattered” after being confronted by police – and many of these vehicles crashed and ignited. This shows how dangerous fiery crashes can be, even if fuel tankers are not involved.

 Key Takeaways

  • Trucking accidents are becoming quite common on the Long Island Expressway
  • Tanker trucks are particularly dangerous because of fire hazards
  • Construction zones often lead to considerable confusion on the highway
