Multiple Teens Die in Long Island After Driver Runs Red Light

When a driver runs a red light, everyone in the intersection faces the risk of fatal injuries. If you find yourself in this situation, you can only pray that you escape with your life. A recent Long Island crash claimed the life of an 18-year-old and injured many other teens, and it was caused by a driver who ran a red light. If a red-light crash in Manhasset harmed you or someone you love, consider a consultation with a personal injury attorney.

Car “Filled With Teens” Struck by Negligent Driver in Nassau County

In September of 2024, NBC News reported that a car occupied by multiple teens had been struck by a driver running a red light in Nassau County. The impact killed the driver who ran the red light and claimed the life of an 18-year-old. The other four teens in the vehicle were all hospitalized with various injuries.

CBS News subsequently shed further light on the accident, reporting that the teen behind the wheel was driving her brother and three other friends home from a party that night. Her brother was seriously injured, and she is currently “fighting for her life” on life support in hospital. CBS noted that an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old are also struggling with serious injuries in hospital.

Further information about the crash is unclear, and it may take weeks for traffic authorities to conclude their investigation. The fact that the teens were returning home from a party raises the possibility of intoxication, although there is no mention of this in any report. Presumably, the teen driver was subjected to a chemical test after the crash – and the authorities likely would have mentioned a positive result.

Regardless, the fact that the other driver ran a red light may make intoxication a moot point. In this type of situation, one could argue that the crash would have occurred regardless of whether the teen driver was sober. This is a concept called “causation” in the legal world, and an experienced lawyer could argue that there was no causational link between the alleged intoxication and the red-light crash.

The families will likely incur significant medical expenses and funeral costs as a result of this crash. One potential pathway to compensation is a personal injury lawsuit, although this could prove complicated. The negligent driver passed away in the accident, so the plaintiffs may need to pursue compensation from his estate.

Can a Manhasset Injury Lawyer Help After a Red-Light Crash?

There are few clearer examples of negligence than running a red light. Even the newest, most unskilled drivers understand that a red light means “stop.” When a driver runs a red light, they instantly make themselves liable for any injuries that occur in the next few moments. To discuss options for compensation after a red-light crash in Manhasset, consider working alongside a New York car accident lawyer at Cohan Law, PLLC.
